When shopping for natural beauty oils, you'll often see labels like "cold-pressed," "virgin," "refined," or "expeller-pressed." These aren't just marketing buzzwords — the extraction method fundamentally affects the oil's nutrient content, effectiveness, and safety for your skin.
What Is Cold-Pressed Oil?
Cold-pressing is a mechanical extraction method where seeds, nuts, or fruits are crushed at low temperatures (typically below 49°C / 120°F) to extract the oil. No heat, chemicals, or solvents are used in the process.
The result is an oil that retains its full spectrum of natural nutrients:
- Vitamins (A, C, E) remain intact and bioavailable
- Essential fatty acids (omega-3, -6, -9) preserve their molecular structure
- Antioxidants (polyphenols, carotenoids) stay active
- Natural colour and aroma are preserved
What Is Refined Oil?
Refined oils undergo extensive processing after initial extraction:
- Degumming: Phosphoric acid removes phospholipids
- Neutralisation: Sodium hydroxide strips free fatty acids
- Bleaching: Clay filters remove colour pigments (and antioxidants)
- Deodorisation: High-temperature steam (200–270°C) removes natural scent
Each step removes impurities — but also strips beneficial compounds. The end product is a clear, odourless oil with a longer shelf life but significantly reduced therapeutic value.
The Nutrient Comparison
Research consistently shows dramatic differences in nutrient content:
| Nutrient | Cold-Pressed | Refined |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin E (tocopherols) | High (60–90 mg/100g) | Low (10–30 mg/100g) |
| Polyphenols | Fully preserved | Up to 80% destroyed |
| Essential fatty acids | Intact molecular structure | May contain trans fats from heat |
| Carotenoids | Present (natural colour) | Removed during bleaching |
| Squalene | High levels | Significantly reduced |
Why It Matters for Your Skin
When you apply a cold-pressed oil to your skin, you're delivering a complex matrix of nutrients that work synergistically — vitamins protect against UV damage, fatty acids rebuild the lipid barrier, and antioxidants fight premature ageing. Refined oils may still moisturise, but they've lost the very compounds that make natural oils therapeutically valuable.
Signs of a Quality Cold-Pressed Oil
- Colour: Should have a natural golden, amber, or green tint (not crystal clear)
- Scent: Should smell like the source plant — nutty, herbal, or slightly earthy
- Texture: Slightly thicker than refined oils; absorbs well without heavy residue
- Bottle: Dark glass (amber or cobalt) to protect from UV light degradation
- Label: Single ingredient (e.g., "Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil"), no additives
What About "Expeller-Pressed"?
Expeller-pressing uses a mechanical screw press — similar to cold-pressing — but without temperature control. Friction from the pressing process can generate heat up to 99°C (210°F), degrading some heat-sensitive nutrients. It's a step above chemical extraction but below true cold-pressing in terms of nutrient preservation.
